How to Build a Temporary Pergola
This tutorial to build a temporary pergola is perfect for a wedding, photo shoot, for some shade, or for your garden if you are okay with it not lasting forever.
My sister and I constructed it for our Thompson’s WaterSeal Bali Dream Deck to provide some romance and shade from the hot Bali sun.
Materials:
- 2 Trellises (with double vertical construction)
- 1 Trellis
- 4 – 2 1/2″ wood screws
- Drill bit
- Drill
- Clamps
Optional:
Instructions:
Dry fit your trellis pieces together to create the pergola shape. Make note of where the top trellis intersects with the two side pieces.
Pre-drill holes through the top trellis piece at the four intersecting points.
Pre-drill holes into the top outer pieces of the vertical side trellises (where they meet the top trellis.)
Clamp or have a friend hold the trellis together and drive the wood screws through the top trellis and into the side pieces.
Stand back and admire your quick and easy temporary pergola!

The garden stool was from Lowe’s (we spray painted it aqua.)

This wouldn’t be easy for me, but I think it would be worth it in a couple of cases–the one that springs to my mind is making a slightly larger one to partition off part of a room for an overnight guest. This little bit of privacy would be really nice.

Robin, LOL, yes and I’ve been known to make do with what I have instead of going to the tool box to hunt for a better bit.
Hmm wonder what I can go shopping for tomorrow, maybe a new saw, that just might be the ticket or maybe a jig saw would do it.
